Although we are used to snow in Wisconsin, we might forget how much damage an excessive snow load can do to our roofs. Here are our top three tips for protecting your roof from an excessive snow load:

1) Designate a snow watch and removal crew to monitor snow depths and remove excessive accumulations. If you don’t provide your own building maintenance, you can potentially contract this out and have inspections done periodically and snow removed as needed.

2) Keep drains and gutters clear of ice and snow to facilitate run-off. This can be a challenge in cold temperatures and you may opt to add heat tapes and elements to assist in preventing ice build up.

3) Be aware of warning signs of a strained roof including popping of ceiling tiles, unusual noises, and noticing the movement or strain in your roof structure members. If you notice anything abnormal contact a contractor for assistance immediately and vacate the area as much as possible.

If at any time you have concerns about your roof, please call the team at Derrick Building Solutions. If you find yourself in an emergency situation because of the snow please ensure that your personnel are evacuated and safe prior to calling for facility assistance.
