Thanks to Our Interns

During the summer of 2018, Derrick Companies had the opportunity to host two interns, Matt Sparstad and Neil Scott.

Matt worked with Derrick Custom Homes and had this to say about his experience:

Having the opportunity to be a part of Derrick Companies this summer has been a great learning experience. Working close with multiple different people gave me a taste of all aspects of the company. Because I had the chance to work with most employees here, it showed what a true company should look like. The way they work together and treat one another created a very welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. I believe this aspect of the company is the reason why they have been in business for 50 plus years. They continue to pride themselves on the Derrick Built way each day which is why they have gotten this far.

I have to give a huge thank you to Dustin Rassbach and Sarah Jackson for making my internship go so smoothly and for all their help along the way. Taking time out of their busy schedules to teach me is something I will never forget.

Neil worked with Derrick Building Solutions and had this to say about his experience:

When I was offered a position as an intern with Derrick Building Solutions I was ready to embark on a new journey.  Even though I had no experience in the commercial building process I was eager to get started.  During the first few weeks I was able to meet and get to know the team from the Project managers to the field Superintendents.  During the time in the office and in the field, I was introduced to the vastness of the commercial construction industry.  The fact that the Project managers and Superintendents alike took me under their wing and offered guidance and mentorship show that the company not only cares about being a contender in the market but that training, and guidance is of greatest importance to the building of the team.  The leadership team ensured that I was involved in the bid process as well as the day to day operations of the team.  Being able to attend the leadership meetings was a great experience in the development of my own leadership style and gave a good understanding of the planning and scheduling process to ensure that the worked continued as smooth and fast as possible.  The fact that I was treated like a new employee and not just an intern was a wonderful experience in its own regard.  The leadership team also challenged me with work in areas of unfamiliar systems and computer programs.  It was a great experience to say the least and anyone looking for a high quality and well diversified summer internship in the construction field should look no further than Derrick Companies.

Aaron Sundeen, Director of Business Development added, “Thank you to Neil and Matthew for their hard work this summer! They were great additions to our team and we wish them the best in the upcoming school year.”
