One of the newest facilities in New Richmond belongs to one of the longest-standing businesses in the community. In 2018 Johnson Motors, established in 1925, worked with Derrick Building Solutions to build a new Johnson Ford dealership facility in New Richmond.

Johnson Ford is a company with a long solid history in New Richmond. Now owned by the Anderson family, who have been involved with the company since 1950, the company has strong core values, dedicated and passionate employees, and a strong community involvement. Johnson Motors family of dealerships includes locations in St. Croix Falls, Menomonie, and two locations in New Richmond, Wisconsin.

“We knew we had outgrown our prior location and when the time was right to look at a brand new dealership building we knew it was time to call Derrick Building Solutions,” said Jeff Moberg, General Manager. “Johnson Motors had worked with Derricks several times before, we are their supplier of commercial vehicles, and we knew they would be the right partner for this significant project,” he added. “It was important for us to work with a company that was a cultural fit for us in sharing core values, and Derrick was that partner.”

The new dealership was a design-build project, meaning that the project architect and builder were part of the same team with the owner and all parties worked together from day one of the project. Ford has architectural standards in place and brand standards that dealers need to adhere to. Within those standards, the dealers have an opportunity to create a style, layout, and efficiency model that works best for them. The design process allowed the team from Johnson Motors to create spaces that were the best fit for customers, employees, and to position the dealership for future growth. The planning team considered safety, comfort, daylight, openness, traffic flow, acoustics, energy efficiency, and accessibility of all who would be utilizing the facility. “It was an interesting project to work on in combining the Ford brand standards with our local dealership needs,” said Jeff Moberg, General Manager, “and working with Derrick Building Solutions made the project smooth from the start.”

The new facility is a Butler® design-build pre-engineered steel-framed building designed specifically to meet the needs of this individual project. Butler’s ability to provide long roof spans helped minimize columns in areas that performed better when open. The Butler® Texture-Cote wall panels met both Ford Motor Company architectural requirements and New Richmond Business Park covenants. The roof features the proven Butler® MR-24 Standing Seam Roof Panels.  The space was designed to include an innovative indoor service intake area with four new stations, the ability to accommodate larger vehicles indoors, greatly increased indoor showroom capacity and outdoor display, a comfortable customer lounge area, and energy efficient solutions such as LED lighting throughout the facility to positively impact the environment as well as the total cost of ownership.

“The on-site team was especially strong on our project,” Jeff said. “Kevin Derrick was on top of all the details and kept the project on track. When Derrick Companies settled on the core value of ‘Willingness to Serve’ they must have been thinking of Kevin Derrick because he really personified that value on our project. We knew we could count on Kevin and the entire team from Derrick to build our vision.”

“We put a lot of thought and work in during the design process to create a space that was designed to work specifically for our business and best serve our customers and employees. After being in the space for a year now, we continue to receive positive feedback from visitors, customers, and employees on how bright, inviting, comfortable, and friendly the new space is. We are very happy with the outcome,” Jeff added.
