October is Careers in Construction Month!

Throughout October, we are highlighting a few of the people and roles that bring our commercial construction projects to life. Meet Lindsey Hohler, our Commercial Drafting Specialist.

Read our Q&A below to learn more about Lindsey, her role, and her experience working in construction.

How did you become interested in drafting and building design?

I have always had a creative side. It was just a matter of where I wanted to use that skill. I became interested in drafting and building design during my senior year of high school when I took a Housing & Interior Design class and discovered I really liked designing spaces. I also grew up playing a game called The Sims, a life simulation game where you’re able to design buildings and houses.

What education or training prepared you for your career?

After graduating high school, I attended Northwood Tech in New Richmond in 2019 and enrolled in the Architectural Commercial Design Program. Then Covid hit, and I had to complete the rest of the program virtually. I graduated with my associates degree in 2021.

What is something people might be surprised to learn about creating construction drawings?

How similar designing a floor plan is compared to putting a puzzle together. In college, my professor told us that if you like solving puzzles, you’ll love designing floor plans. Instead of 5,000 little puzzle pieces, you’re dealing with finding spots for bathrooms, offices, conference rooms, a break room, etc. For the record I hate puzzles, but I do enjoy the challenge that comes with putting a floor plan together!

What would you tell someone who is considering a career in construction?

Make sure your communication skills are solid. Being a great communicator is crucial when dealing with clients and project timelines.

What is one building detail you notice everywhere you go?

Not a detail, but the thing that always catches my eye is the building’s design. Whether it’s the colors and materials on the exterior or the interior design and finishes, I love seeing how materials and design elements have been used to make the building unique. It also gives me inspiration for my own work.
